How often should you clean your gutters in Ireland?

Updated

The short answer

Most Irish homes should have their gutters cleaned at least once a year, in late autumn once the leaves have fallen. If you have trees close to the house, a roof that sheds a lot of moss, or you live in the wetter west of the country, twice a year (late autumn and spring) is safer.

Why once a year is the minimum here

Ireland's rain is steady rather than seasonal, so gutters work hard all year. Leaves, moss sliding off the roof, seeds and grit gradually build up, and a gutter that's half full in October can overflow in the first heavy storm of the winter.

A late autumn clean, after the trees have dropped their leaves, catches the worst of it at the right moment, just before the wettest months.

When you need it more often

Twice a year, or even more, makes sense if:

  • Trees overhang or sit close to the roof
  • Your roof has a lot of moss, which washes into the gutters in clumps
  • You live in Kerry, Clare, West Cork or anywhere facing the Atlantic, where rainfall is higher
  • The house has long gutter runs with few downpipes
  • You've had overflowing or damp patches before

Signs your gutters need clearing now

Don't wait for the calendar if you see any of these: water spilling over the edge when it rains, plants or grass growing out of the gutter, green or black streaks running down the walls, damp patches on inside walls near the eaves, or gutters sagging away from the fascia.

What happens if you leave them

A blocked gutter sends rainwater down the face of the house instead of into the drain. Over a few winters that soaks render and brickwork, causes damp inside, rots timber fascias and soffits, and can undermine paths and foundations where the water lands.

Clearing gutters is one of the cheapest bits of house maintenance; fixing what blocked gutters cause is one of the more expensive.

Should you do it yourself?

Single-storey gutters you can reach safely from a stable ladder are a reasonable DIY job. Two-storey gutters are where most ladder accidents happen, and a professional with a gutter vacuum or the right access equipment will usually also flush the downpipes and spot loose brackets or leaking joints while they're up there.

Questions

What's the best month to clean gutters in Ireland?

November or early December, once most leaves have fallen but before the wettest part of winter. If you only clean once a year, make it then.

Do gutter guards mean I never have to clean them?

No. Guards reduce how often gutters block, but moss and fine debris still build up on and under them, and they need checking and clearing too.
